Slow down, sip some tea, and settle in for a weekend exploring confident approaches to vessel making with Canadian artist, Emma Smith. Over the course of the weekend, Emma will share the pinch-and-coil making technique that she uses to develop strong forms built with intention, gentleness, and specificity. Emma's making ethos is rooted in the belief that play and craftsmanship are not in conflict - rather, successful forms come to fruition through an understanding of oneself, a relationship with the material, and the openness to being delighted.
About Sue:
Emma Smith is an award-winning Canadian ceramic artist, creative educator, and outdoor enthusiast whose multi-disciplinary art practice centers around celebration of place, environment, and body. Recognized as a leader in the international wood firing community, she has been making and teaching ceramics for over 15 years. Her work is made to be experienced quietly, encouraging moments of contemplation and reflection. In addition to her clay practice, she is an avid long-distance hill walker, kiln builder, dancer, and writer. Her many loves and interests have made for a vibrant life that provides endless inspiration and opportunities for expression - be it through clowning, circus arts, photography, cold swimming, or spending all day making pierogies from scratch. You can currently find her travelling the globe; making art, watching clouds, and discovering what it means to live a beautiful life.

Saddle up for an exploration of ceramic form, surface and narrative design with Montana potter Sue Tirrell. Sue will demonstrate her process of designing and fabricating Handbuilt plates and wheel-thrown pottery forms that become vehicles for densely painted and carved narrative designs. Preliminary drawing and designing, and discussion of narrative content will set the stage for exploring surface design techniques including handmade stencils, painting, wax resist and sgraffito carving. Come with questions and stories; head back to your studio with new ways of communicating your vision.
